Upscale Departures Magazine Celebrates Pastrami Reubens in Summer Issue

“Hold the Mayo!” Screams the headline on the 1500 word food feature story on New York’s pastrami and Reuben sandwiches, in the massive Summer issue of Departures Magazine. Amidst the glamorous ads for Patek Philippe watches, Mercedes Benz automobiles, Louis Vuitton purses and Cartier rings, you’ll find a fantastic and deliciously photographed feature on one of our favorite regular folk’s food: the pastrami Reuben.

The article cites many amazing sandwiches and treatments from New York’s famous sandwich shops including Katz’s (“real New Yorker’s usually have a hot dog on the side while”), the Carnegie Deli (purported home of the Reuben), and Pastrami Queen, where the sandwich is ordered with a side of cold sauerkraut. The article also dives into “the more effete, representations of these sandwiches,” which are identified as “trendy.” This includes a smaller sandwich held together by frilled toothpicks, available at Lambs Club. According to the article the “Reuben du jour” was redesigned by Ralph Lauren at his hot, new supper club, The Polo Bar ($24 for the brand name interpretation).

The day has finally arrived when the  beautiful people realized what the rest of us have known for generations: the Reuben sets the bar for supreme sandwich satisfaction.
